One Nation leader Pauline Hanson’s strong stance on limiting immigration is well known.
But her new welfare plan shifts the focus from foreign people to invasive species. Specifically, the marauding cane toad.
Cane toads were never meant to live in Australia.
Like so many foreign species wreaking havoc on our ecosystems, cane toads were introduced by humans. That was back in 1935, when the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations brought some over from South America hoping they’d help control the cane beetle numbers.
Hanson suggests ‘collect-a-toad’ program for dole recipients
Fast forward 84 years, and now Pauline Hanson wants to put welfare recipients to work killing cane toads.
As The Courier-Mail reports, her plan calls for Work for the Dole recipients to earn 10 cents for each toad they collect in a three-month, ‘collect-a-toad’ program.
Hanson wrote to Prime Minister Scott Morrison to back the federally funded scheme in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, according to the AAP.
She hopes her plan will help eradicate the cane toad pest.
