Barnaby Joyce’s Committee Fights for Workers Right

Left-wing agitators would have you believe that the Coalition cares only for the deep pockets of big business and thinks not at all about the average Aussie worker.

But a coalition-dominated parliamentary committee, chaired by Barnaby Joyce, put pain to this often repeated misconception.

As AAP reports, the committee recommended law changes, which would prohibit long-term casuals replacing full-time workers.

Revamping the Fair Work Act

Such an amendment of these ‘casualised’ workforces, which trend high in intense labour-hire sectors like mining, was seen by the committee as a necessary revision to the Fair Work Act.

The committee report also stated that additional provisions should be added to the Act, which would guarantee employees are legally able to convert from casual to permanent employment after a certain amount of time.

A spokesman for Industrial Relations minister Kelly O’Dwyer insisted the committee’s recommendations would be taken seriously into account by the Coalition. The spokesman stated on O’Dwyer’s behalf:

Since October, most award-covered employees have had the right to request conversion from casual to permanent work after a set period of ongoing casual work.

This is an important right and we respect the Fair Work Commission’s decision that it should be extended to most award-covered workers.

This looks like a far cry from the big-business focused Coalition that’s paraded the headlines since this year’s income tax bracket changes.

In particular, CFMEU National President Tony Maher admitted the report was quite at odds with Ms O’Dwyer’s intervention in a Federal Court test case, which could rule long-term casual employees are entitled to annual leave entitlements.

Thankfully, Joyce is already on the loophole lookout.

And MPs have been forced to admit that this is definitely a step in the complete opposite direction to what the mainstream media portrays our government to be heading in.

Though surprisingly, they still aren’t happy about it. 

A somewhat sour response to the Coalition’s changes

Interestingly, Liberal MP Tim Wilson refused to associate with this report of amendment recommendations, insisting he wasn’t present at the committee meeting.

But even more of a downer was Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary, Sally McManus. She feels the changes were only recommended because the coalition would be ‘toast’ if they continued to allow big business to casualise jobs.

Way to put a sour spin on progression, McManus. She added:

We need to change the rules and close the loopholes that allow business to destroy good, secure jobs through the use of labour hire and other underhanded tactics.

And though that’s exactly what this committee aims to do, McManus just needed to put her two cents in.

No doubt the left-leaners will keep chirping their distaste, as well.
